submarine U-boat
A submarine U-boat is a type of underwater naval vessel used primarily by Germany, especially during World Wars I and II. "U-boat" is short for "Unterseeboot," meaning "undersea boat" in German. These submarines are designed to operate below the water’s surface for extended periods, allowing them to hide from enemy ships and submarines. U-boats are equipped with torpedoes, and sometimes missiles, to attack surface vessels and other submarines. Their stealth capabilities made them effective for covert warfare, such as disrupting enemy shipping routes. Modern submarines have advanced technology, but the term "U-boat" generally refers to those from the early 20th century.
