subcortical pathways
Subcortical pathways are routes in the brain that connect deeper regions below the cortex, such as the thalamus, basal ganglia, and brainstem, to different parts of the brain and body. They play key roles in automatic functions like reflexes, movement control, emotional responses, and sensory processing. These pathways operate mostly outside of conscious awareness, enabling quick responses to stimuli, and support fundamental biological processes essential for survival. They work in tandem with the brain’s outer layer (cortex) but are crucial for rapid, instinctive reactions and basic bodily functions.
