Subcomandante Marcos (Galeano)

Subcomandante Marcos, born in 1957, was the charismatic spokesperson and leader of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Mexico’s Chiapas region. He became an international symbol for indigenous rights, social justice, and anti-globalization activism. Marcos used guerrilla tactics, political writings, and a distinctive masked persona to challenge government policies and promote autonomy for indigenous communities. Although his real identity was largely kept secret, his writings and leadership visibly galvanized grassroots movements advocating for dignity, land rights, and political change.
