Subaltern

The term "subaltern" refers to groups or individuals who are socially, politically, or economically marginalized or oppressed, often outside of mainstream power structures. Originally from military terminology meaning an officer below the rank of captain, it has been adopted by scholars to describe those whose voices and experiences are undervalued or silenced, such as marginalized communities, peasants, and oppressed classes. Recognizing subaltern groups involves understanding their perspectives and challenges, which are often overlooked by dominant social or political institutions.
