Stretch reflex
The stretch reflex is a muscle's automatic response to being stretched. When a muscle is gently pulled or stretched, sensors in the muscle detect this change and instantly send a signal to the spinal cord. The spinal cord then quickly sends a message back to the same muscle, causing it to contract and resist the stretch. This reflex helps maintain muscle tone, posture, and protects muscles from overstretching or injury. It's an involuntary, rapid adjustment that occurs without conscious thought, ensuring muscles respond swiftly to maintain balance and stability.
