Streptolysin S

Streptolysin S is a toxin produced by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes, which causes strep throat and other infections. This toxin is responsible for damaging certain cells in the body’s immune system, especially red blood cells and white blood cells, by creating small holes in their membranes. This damage helps the bacteria spread and evade the immune response. Streptolysin S is heat-resistant and actively contributes to tissue destruction and inflammation during infections, playing a key role in the bacteria’s ability to cause disease.
