Strep pneumoniae

Streptococcus pneumoniae, often called pneumococcus, is a type of bacteria that can cause infections, especially in the lungs, sinuses, and ears. It is a common cause of pneumonia, meningitis, and ear infections. The bacteria spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Many healthy people carry it in their nose or throat without problems, but it can become dangerous if it invades further into the body. Vaccines are available to help protect against some of the most serious infections caused by pneumococcus. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria.
