Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium is a type of tissue composed of multiple layers of flat, scale-like cells. Its primary function is to protect underlying tissues from damage, friction, and infection. This tissue is found in areas exposed to frequent abrasion, such as the skin’s outer layer, the lining of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and vagina. The multiple layers help it withstand wear and tear, with new cells continuously forming at the base and moving upward to replace the outermost cells that are shed or worn away.
