Stratification systems are ways societies organize and categorize people into different social layers or groups based on factors like wealth, occupation, education, or social status. These layers, called strata, influence individuals' access to resources, opportunities, and privileges. For example, some people may belong to higher classes with more influence and wealth, while others may be in lower classes facing less privilege. Stratification helps explain social inequalities and how they persist over time, shaping people's experiences and life chances within a society.
