Strategic Defence Initiative

The Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI), announced in 1983 by U.S. President Ronald Reagan, was a plan to develop advanced missile defense systems to protect the United States from nuclear attacks. It aimed to use space-based technologies like lasers and satellites to detect and destroy incoming missiles before they could reach their targets. While ambitious and innovative, SDI was also expensive and technically challenging, and it ultimately evolved into different missile defense efforts. Its goal was to enhance national security by preventing missile attacks through advanced, layered defense systems.
