Stigma and Discrimination

Stigma is the negative perception or unfair judgment attached to a person or group because of a characteristic, condition, or trait, such as mental health issues, illness, or background. Discrimination occurs when these negative perceptions lead to unfair treatment, exclusion, or barriers for that individual or group. Essentially, stigma creates a harmful label, while discrimination puts that label into action, often resulting in social, economic, or emotional hardship. Both can prevent people from accessing opportunities, support, or acceptance, and addressing them involves promoting understanding, respect, and equitable treatment.
