Statistical entropy is a measure of the disorder or randomness within a system, based on the number of possible ways its parts can be arranged. In simple terms, the more ways a system can be organized without changing its overall state, the higher its entropy. It reflects the likelihood of a system's configuration; highly ordered states have low entropy, while disordered states have high entropy. This concept helps explain natural tendencies toward disorder and the direction of processes, like why hot and cold liquids naturally mix, increasing the system's overall entropy.
