States and Territories of Australia

Australia is divided into six states—New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania—each with its own government responsible for local laws and services. Additionally, there are two territories: the Australian Capital Territory (where Canberra, the capital city, is located) and the Northern Territory, which have administrative authority from the federal government but also manage local matters. While states have broader constitutional powers, territories are generally more directly governed by the national government. This division helps organize governance across the vast landscape, balancing local control with national coordination.
