Stapleton International Airport (now Denver International Airport)

Stapleton International Airport was Denver’s main airport from 1929 until 1995, when Denver International Airport (DIA) opened nearby. Originally called Denver Municipal Airport, Stapleton was expanded over the years to handle increasing passenger and cargo traffic. It featured multiple runways and facilities, serving as a regional hub. As demand grew, it became outdated, prompting the construction of DIA, which is larger, more modern, and located farther from the city center. After closing in 1995, the Stapleton site was redeveloped into a mixed-use area with residential neighborhoods, parks, and commercial spaces, preserving some airport history while supporting urban growth.
