Staphylococcus epidermidis

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common type of bacteria naturally found on human skin and mucous membranes. Usually harmless, it helps protect the body by outcompeting more dangerous bacteria. However, in some cases, especially when devices like catheters or implants are in the body, it can enter the bloodstream or other areas and cause infections. These infections are often difficult to treat because the bacteria can form protective layers called biofilms. While generally not dangerous for healthy people, it can pose risks to those with weakened immune systems or medical devices.
