Standedge Tunnel

Standedge Tunnel is the longest canal tunnel in the United Kingdom, stretching about 5 miles beneath the Pennines near Huddersfield. Built between 1811 and 1819, it was designed to allow boats to pass through the mountain range more efficiently, bypassing difficult surface terrain. The tunnel is part of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and features a combination of historical engineering and modern maintenance. It is still used today by narrowboats for leisure cruising, and visitors can learn about its construction and history through guided tours and exhibits.
