St. Thomas Becket

St. Thomas Becket was an English archbishop and a close friend of King Henry II in the 12th century. Initially serving as Henry’s chancellor, he later became Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicating his life to defending the church's rights and independence from royal control. Their differing views led to conflicts, and in 1170, Becket was murderously attacked inside Canterbury Cathedral by knights loyal to the king. He is considered a martyr and saint for his steadfastness in safeguarding church authority. His legacy highlights the complex relationship between church and state, and he remains a symbol of religious conviction and justice.
