ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)
A STEMI, or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, is a type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery, which supplies blood to the heart muscle. This blockage prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching the heart tissue, leading to damage or death of heart cells. The term "STEMI" refers to specific changes seen on an EKG (electrocardiogram) that indicate a significant heart attack. Prompt medical treatment, such as restoring blood flow through medications or procedures like angioplasty, is critical to minimize heart damage and improve outcomes.
