spontaneous breathing trial (SBT)

A spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) is a test used in hospitals to see if a patient who has been on a ventilator (a machine helping with breathing) can breathe on their own. During the test, the ventilator support is reduced or temporarily stopped, allowing the patient to breathe spontaneously. Healthcare providers observe for signs of successful breathing without assistance, such as steady breathing and good oxygen levels. If the patient shows they can breathe adequately, they may be ready to be taken off the ventilator permanently. The SBT helps ensure the patient can safely breathe independently before stopping ventilator support.
