Spodosols
Spodosols are a type of soil found mainly in cooler, forested regions with acidic conditions. They are characterized by a distinct layered structure, including a light-colored, leached zone called the E horizon rich in minerals washed down from above, and a darker, nutrient-rich spodic horizon below where organic material and clay accumulate. These soils tend to be low in nutrients because of leaching, making them less ideal for agriculture without amendments. They are important in forest ecosystems and cover large areas in northern forests and mountainous regions.
