Spinal Shunt

A spinal shunt is a medical device used to treat conditions like hydrocephalus, where excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up around the brain or spinal cord. The shunt acts as a pathway to divert this fluid from the area of excess to another part of the body, often the abdominal cavity, where it can be safely absorbed. It typically consists of a catheter system with a valve that regulates flow. This helps reduce pressure on the brain or spinal cord, relieving symptoms and preventing damage caused by fluid buildup.
