spectacle theory
Spectacle theory, developed by theorist Guy Debord, suggests that modern society increasingly experiences life through images, media, and entertainment rather than direct, authentic experiences. It argues that images and media create a "spectacle" that shapes perceptions, controls attention, and replaces genuine social and political engagement. Essentially, society becomes focused on visual representations and consumer culture, which can mask real social issues and distract individuals from meaningful participation. This concept highlights how media and images influence our understanding of reality, often at the expense of critical thought or authentic human connection.
