Spatial externalization
Spatial externalization is a perceptual process where our brain interprets sounds as originating from outside our head, giving us a sense of location in space. When we hear conversations, music, or environmental noises, our brain uses cues like sound intensity, timing, and frequency differences between our ears to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. This ability helps us navigate and understand our environment more effectively. Essentially, spatial externalization makes sounds seem like they are coming from specific places in the world, rather than just inside our head, enhancing our awareness and immersion in our surroundings.
