Spanish rule
Spanish Rule refers to the period when Spain controlled the Philippine islands, from 1565 to 1898. During this era, Spain established governance, religion (Catholicism), and cultural influences that shaped Philippine society. The Spanish government imposed political and economic structures, converted many Filipinos to Christianity, and introduced new customs, language, and education systems. While this rule brought some modernization, it also involved colonial exploitation and cultural suppression. The period ended with the Treaty of Paris, after the Spanish-American War, when the Philippines became a territory of the United States. Spanish Rule significantly impacted the country’s history, identity, and cultural development.
