Spanish Republican Army
The Spanish Republican Army was the military force that defended the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). It was made up of soldiers, volunteers, and militias loyal to the democratically elected government, fighting against the Nationalist forces led by General Franco. The army was characterized by internal divisions, diverse political ideologies, and a mix of regular troops and revolutionary units. Ultimately, the Republican Army was defeated, leading to Franco’s dictatorship. It played a crucial role in resisting fascist forces but faced significant organizational and logistical challenges during the conflict.
