Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides)

Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is an epiphytic plant that hangs in long, gray-green strands from tree branches, primarily in warm, humid environments like the southeastern United States. It does not root in the ground; instead, it absorbs moisture and nutrients directly from the air through tiny scales on its surface. Its wispy appearance adds a soft, misty look to trees and provides habitat for wildlife. Despite its name, it is unrelated to true moss and is more closely related to pineapples and bromeliads. Spanish moss plays a significant role in its ecosystem by offering cover and moisture for various animals.
