Space Surveillance System
The Space Surveillance System (SSS) is a network of ground-based radar and optical sensors that monitor objects in Earth's orbit, including satellites and space debris. Its main purpose is to track and identify these objects to ensure the safety of space activities, prevent collisions, and support space situational awareness. By continuously observing space, the SSS provides critical data to manage orbital traffic, assist satellite operations, and protect valuable space assets from the risks posed by uncontrolled debris and malfunctioning hardware.
