Soviet blockade of Berlin
The Soviet blockade of Berlin (1948-1949) was an attempt by the Soviet Union to cut off all Western access to West Berlin, which was controlled by the Allies (U.S., Britain, France). They blockaded roads, railways, and canals, aiming to force the Allies out of the city. In response, the Allies organized the Berlin Airlift, delivering food, fuel, and supplies by aircraft. The blockade lasted nearly a year and ended when the Soviets lifted it, highlighting Cold War tensions and the division of Germany into East and West.
