South Sandwich Trench

The South Sandwich Trench is a deep underwater canyon located in the southern Atlantic Ocean near the South Sandwich Islands. It forms where two tectonic plates—one oceanic and one continental—move toward each other, causing the oceanic crust to sink beneath the other. This process, called subduction, creates the trench, which is one of the deepest parts of the ocean floor.
