South African Native Labour Contingent
The South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC) was a group of laborers recruited from South Africa during World War I to support British military efforts. Comprising mostly Black South Africans, they were sent to provide essential services such as transport, construction, and supply logistics in various campaigns. While they played a crucial role in supporting the war, their contributions and experiences have often been overlooked in histories of the conflict. The SANLC highlights issues of race, labor, and the complex dynamics of colonialism during a time of global conflict.
