South African Border Forces

The South African Border Forces were specialized military units established during and after apartheid-era policies to guard South Africa’s borders, especially against infiltration, smuggling, and potential threats. They operated separately from the regular armed forces and police, focusing on securing land and maritime borders. Their aims included maintaining national security, controlling illegal crossings, and protecting economic interests. These forces played a role during periods of heightened political tension and conflict, but were eventually integrated into the South African National Defence Force after the end of apartheid.
