Sound Absorption Coefficient
The sound absorption coefficient measures how well a material absorbs sound energy. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 means the material reflects all sound and absorbs none, and 1 means it absorbs all sound and reflects none. For example, a coefficient of 0.8 indicates the material absorbs 80% of the sound energy that hits it. This property helps determine how effective materials are at reducing noise and controlling acoustics in spaces like offices, theaters, or recording studios. Higher absorption coefficients contribute to quieter, more comfortable environments by minimizing echo and background noise.
