Sorption
Sorption is a process where a substance, called the sorbate, is held onto or absorbed by another material, known as the sorbent. It includes both adsorption, where molecules stick to the surface, and absorption, where molecules penetrate into the material’s interior. This process is common in nature and various industries, such as in water purification, where contaminants are removed by attracting or trapping them in filters. Essentially, sorption helps transfer or trap substances from one phase to another, playing a key role in environmental and industrial applications.
