Sophia of Hanover
Sophia of Hanover was a German princess and the granddaughter of King James I of England. Her significance lies in her descendant, Sophia's son, Elector Friedrich of Hanover, who became King George I of Great Britain in 1714. This made Sophia the matrilineal ancestor of the British royal family, and the Act of Settlement 1701 was established to ensure a Protestant succession through her line. Although Sophia died before her son became king, her lineage ensured her place as a key figure in establishing the Protestant monarchy in Britain.
