Songun (Military First)

Songun, or "Military First," is a guiding principle of North Korea's government that prioritizes the military in national affairs and resource allocation. Established by Kim Il-sung and later emphasized by his son Kim Jong-il, it reflects the belief that a strong military is essential for national security and sovereignty. Under this policy, the military receives significant funding and support, often at the expense of other sectors like healthcare and education. Songun justifies the regime's focus on military preparedness, which includes maintaining a nuclear arsenal, as necessary for deterring external threats and achieving political goals.
