Somatic symptom disorder

Somatic symptom disorder is a mental health condition where a person experiences intense concern and anxiety about physical symptoms—like pain, fatigue, or other sensations—that may or may not have a clear medical cause. These symptoms are real and distressing, leading to significant frustration and sometimes frequent medical visits. The disorder involves a disproportionate focus on these symptoms, often driven by emotional or psychological factors, which can amplify discomfort. Importantly, it’s not about faking; rather, the brain’s interpretation of sensations becomes heightened, making normal bodily sensations feel much more serious than they are.
