Somaliland (disputed region)
Somaliland is a region in the northwestern part of Somalia that declared independence in 1991 after Somalia’s central government collapsed. It considers itself a separate, sovereign state with its own government, military, and institutions. However, it is not internationally recognized as an independent country; most countries and the United Nations regard it as part of Somalia. Despite this, Somaliland has maintained relative stability and has developed strong administrative structures. The situation is a complex example of nationhood and sovereignty claims, with Somaliland functioning with a high degree of autonomy but lacking formal diplomatic recognition worldwide.
