
Soluble guanylate cyclase
Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) is an enzyme found inside certain cells, mainly in blood vessels and nerves. It acts as a sensor for a molecule called nitric oxide (NO), which is released by the body during processes like blood vessel relaxation. When NO binds to sGC, it activates the enzyme, which then produces a signaling molecule called cyclic GMP (cGMP). This cGMP helps regulate functions like blood flow, muscle relaxation, and nerve signaling. In essence, sGC plays a key role in translating chemical signals into responses that affect cardiovascular and nervous system health.
