Solubility parameter

The solubility parameter is a way to predict if two substances will mix well, like oil and water or paint and a surface. It measures the overall cohesive energy in a material—the strength of the forces holding its molecules together. When two materials have similar solubility parameters, they tend to dissolve or blend smoothly because their molecular forces are compatible. Conversely, differing parameters suggest poor mixing. This concept helps chemists choose the right solvents, adhesives, or coatings for specific materials, ensuring better performance and durability in products and processes.
