Solidarity (Solidarność) movement
The Solidarity (Solidarność) movement was a broad, independent trade union in Poland emerging in 1980, advocating for workers’ rights and political reform under an oppressive communist regime. It rapidly grew into a significant social and political force, inspiring broader opposition to communism across Eastern Europe. Led by Lech Wałęsa, Solidarity championed collective bargaining, human rights, and democratic change. Its activities eventually contributed to the fall of communism in Poland and Eastern Europe, symbolizing the power of peaceful resistance, worker solidarity, and grassroots activism in challenging authoritarian governments.
