Soil Profiles

A soil profile is a detailed view of the layers, or horizons, that make up the soil from the surface down to the unaltered bedrock. These layers include the organic-rich topsoil where plants grow, the subsoil with accumulated minerals, and the underlying parent material. Each layer differs in composition, color, and texture, reflecting processes like organic decomposition, mineral movement, and weathering. Studying soil profiles helps us understand soil health, fertility, and suitability for plants or construction, providing essential information about land use, agriculture, and environmental conditions.
