Sodium-ion technology
Sodium-ion technology is a type of battery that stores and releases energy using sodium ions, instead of the lithium ions used in typical lithium-ion batteries. Sodium is more abundant and cheaper than lithium, making these batteries potentially more cost-effective and sustainable. During charging, sodium ions move into the battery’s electrodes; when discharging, they flow back out to produce electricity. While still in development, sodium-ion batteries aim to offer a reusable, eco-friendly alternative for energy storage in applications like grid power and electric vehicles, with comparable performance to lithium-ion batteries but at lower material costs.
