Sodium Hydroxide Production
Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, is mainly produced through the electrolysis of brine (saltwater). In this process, an electric current is passed through a highly concentrated salt solution, causing the salt to split into its basic components: sodium and chloride. The sodium ions combine with water to form sodium hydroxide, while chlorine gas is produced as a byproduct. This method is efficient and widely used because it yields pure sodium hydroxide suitable for various industrial applications, including soap-making, paper production, and water treatment.
