Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors

Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are medications that help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. They work by blocking a protein in the kidneys called SGLT2, which normally reabsorbs sugar back into the blood. By inhibiting this protein, these drugs cause excess sugar to be expelled in the urine, reducing blood sugar levels. Besides controlling blood glucose, SGLT2 inhibitors have also been shown to benefit heart and kidney health. They are typically prescribed alongside other diabetes treatments, with added advantages of promoting weight loss and lowering blood pressure.
