Social Security Act of 1965
The Social Security Act of 1965 expanded the original Social Security system by establishing Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare provides health insurance for Americans aged 65 and older, as well as some younger people with disabilities, helping cover hospital and medical expenses. Medicaid offers health coverage for low-income individuals and families. These programs aimed to improve healthcare access and financial protection for vulnerable populations, complementing the existing social insurance system. Enacted under President Lyndon B. Johnson, the act significantly enhanced social safety nets, promoting health and well-being among those most in need.
