SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die)
SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) is a methodology aimed at reducing the time it takes to switch from producing one product to another in manufacturing, ideally to under 10 minutes. By carefully analyzing and streamlining the changeover process—distinguishing between tasks that can be done while the machine is running (external) and those that require the machine to stop (internal)—it minimizes downtime. Implementing SMED improves efficiency, flexibility, and productivity, allowing companies to respond quickly to customer demands, reduce inventory costs, and increase overall operational agility.
