Sleep Phases
Sleep consists of several phases that cycle throughout the night, mainly including REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and NREM (Non-REM) stages. NREM has three stages: lighter sleep (Stage 1), deeper sleep (Stage 2), and deep restorative sleep (Stage 3). During NREM, the body repairs tissues, consolidates memory, and restores energy. REM sleep involves vivid dreaming, brain activity similar to wakefulness, and is essential for learning and emotional health. These phases repeat in cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes, helping the body and brain recover and prepare for the next day.
