Slack-key guitar

Slack-key guitar, also known as "kī hōʻalu" in Hawaiian, is a fingerpicking style where the strings are loosened (“slacked”) from their standard tuning. This technique creates a distinctive, resonant sound with rich harmonies and a relaxed, melodic feel. Musicians often tune the guitar differently for each piece, allowing for open chords and drone notes that evoke the lush landscapes of Hawaii. Originally used for traditional Hawaiian music, slack-key has become a celebrated art form that emphasizes expressive, flowing melodies and intricate fingerwork.
