Skin culture
A skin culture is a diagnostic test where a small sample of skin or a wound swab is collected to identify bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms causing infection. The sample is placed on a special medium that encourages microbial growth, allowing laboratory analysis to determine the specific germ involved. This helps healthcare providers select the most effective treatment, such as antibiotics or antifungal medications. Skin cultures are commonly used for persistent or unusual skin infections or sores that do not respond to initial treatments.
