Six Patriarchs

The Six Patriarchs are revered founders of the Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhist tradition, each contributing to its development. They include Bodhidharma, credited with bringing Buddhism to China; Huike, the first Chinese disciple; Sengcan, known for his poetic teachings; Huineng, the sixth patriarch who emphasized sudden enlightenment; Shenxiu, a prominent early teacher; and Shenhui, who promoted the doctrine of sudden enlightenment. Collectively, they represent key figures shaping Zen's philosophy, emphasizing direct insight beyond language and formal rituals. Their teachings continue to influence Zen practice, emphasizing intuitive understanding and awakening.
